Research note
Read agent reliability beyond a single successful run
A short route into τ-bench’s final-state and repeated-trial ideas, with a practical way to record a tiny task suite.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Repeated success and one successful attempt answer different operational questions.
Keep benchmark families distinct
The archived Artificial Analysis announcement discusses a voice extension of tool-agent evaluation. For the underlying method, the original τ-bench paper evaluates simulated interactions against an expected final database state and measures consistency over repeated trials. Those are useful design ideas. The older paper does not independently verify the later voice announcement, its models or its reported scores.
Define the final state
Imagine a sandbox assistant asked to update a fictional delivery preference. List the expected changed field and the fields that must stay untouched. Add a compound request and an ambiguous request that requires clarification. Save the initial database snapshot for each case. A conversational “done” message should be recorded separately from whether the expected state was actually reached.
Preserve the denominator
If you later run each case several times, retain every run and distinguish per-attempt success from success on every repetition. Explain how resets, timeouts and evaluator errors are counted. Do not quietly select the best transcript. This proposed miniature suite was not executed, and it would not establish production reliability. It gives a concrete format for asking whether a future evaluation supports the operational claim being made.
Put it to work.
- Specify expected final state.
- Reset each attempt.
- Retain failed runs.
- State the success denominator.
