Read a released coding agent as a specification

Use the code-simplifier source to identify the behavior a reusable agent promises, then design a small adoption review around it.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A published agent file is an inspectable behavior proposal, not evidence that every run preserves behavior.

What is actually released

Boris Cherny’s archived post announces a code-simplifier agent used by the Claude Code team. The linked official source focuses on recently modified code, project conventions and preserving functionality while improving clarity. Static reading confirms those instructions are present. It does not confirm installation compatibility, execution quality or the absence of regressions in a particular repository.

Translate prose into checks

Take one small, awkward function from a disposable example project. Describe its public inputs, outputs and edge cases before requesting simplification. Then compare the proposed change against three questions: did behavior change, did the diff expand beyond the intended scope, and can a teammate explain the result more easily? Keep stylistic preference separate from a failing behavioral check.

Make adoption reversible

Review repository instructions and the current license before reusing a released asset. Pin the revision you inspect and record any local modifications. Start with one suggested diff that a person can accept or discard. This is a repository-reading exercise, not a recommendation to run an installation command blindly. No plugin was installed, and the source’s claims of intended behavior were not tested for this resource.

Put it to work.

  • Inspect the current source.
  • Read the license separately.
  • Limit the first diff.
  • Verify behavior before accepting.

Go to the source.

Original material, with its own scope and publication date. This note is an explanation, not a CooScope performance test.
