Read Local Deep Researcher before running it

A repository walkthrough for mapping model, search and report stages into an explicit configuration and data-flow record.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A configuration map makes a research assistant’s dependencies reviewable before any documents are supplied.

Follow the configuration

Lance Martin’s archived post links to Local Deep Researcher and names local model hosts alongside several search services. The current README documents provider selection, search-tool selection and a research-loop setting. Reading those configuration sections is enough to identify distinct components. It is not evidence that a particular installation stays offline, respects a data policy or produces reliable reports.

Draw the request path

Use a harmless question such as finding public documentation for a programming feature. List what enters the model, what becomes a search query, what pages may be fetched and where the final report is stored. Put a destination beside each stage. Add an “unknown” entry wherever behavior depends on a default you have not inspected; resolve that entry before introducing private material.

Prepare the first experiment

Choose one documented configuration and a bounded number of research iterations. Save the exact configuration without secrets, one expected source and a rule for stopping when no new evidence appears. Check the repository’s current license and setup instructions separately. No installation, network trace or report-quality experiment was performed here. This reading path helps prepare those checks while keeping configuration facts separate from assumptions about privacy.

Put it to work.

  • Map model and search separately.
  • Resolve relevant defaults.
  • Use a harmless first question.
  • Keep credentials out of notes.

Go to the source.

Original material, with its own scope and publication date. This note is an explanation, not a CooScope performance test.
