Memory, context and training are different levers
Locate where information is stored and how it reaches the model before choosing a memory feature, retrieval system or training job.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Saving a note changes available information; updating weights changes the model. Do not confuse the two.
Why it matters
When an assistant forgets a decision, the missing information may never have reached its current input. More training is not automatically the right repair. Start by distinguishing information in the current context, information saved elsewhere, and parameters learned during training.
Read the evidence
Anthropic’s September 2025 context-engineering article treats context as a limited resource that must be selected and maintained. nanoGPT offers a contrasting code-reading example: a model definition and a training loop. Its maintainer now labels that repository deprecated, so it is a historical teaching reference, not a default stack recommendation.
How to use this resource
Try this proposed diagnostic exercise on paper before adding infrastructure. Use one fact, such as a project’s chosen output format, and trace its complete path.
- Where is the fact stored: a prompt, a document, an index, a database or model parameters?
- What selects it for the next request, and can you inspect the selected text?
- How is a changed fact corrected without leaving conflicting old versions?
- What should happen when the fact is missing, stale or outside the allowed scope?
Limits and evidence
These are mechanism distinctions and a proposed inspection exercise, not a measured comparison of memory products. A larger context or a saved note does not establish reliable recall. No model was trained and no retrieval-quality score is claimed.
Put it to work.
- Name the storage layer.
- Inspect the actual model input.
- Define an update and deletion path.
- Test missing and conflicting information separately.
